It is important to understand how to properly dry and season wood to reduce its moisture content.

Determine which stain to use

First, decide which wood stain is best for your project. It can be hard to choose the right stain for your woodwork without sanding it. Different wood species respond to stain differently, and may react differently to different grits. Test the stain on a small section of wood before applying a large amount. It is a good idea that you use the same wood type and the same preparation technique. Also, if you're using a dark stain, it's unlikely to work well with a light one. A medium brown stain can be used if you're unsure. It's more durable and will last longer.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will help you join two pieces of wooden together. We will use the pocket hole joint, which is drilling holes in the wood to join them. This works well if the wood is straight and smooth. You might consider dowel joinery if your wood isn’t straight or flat. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Measure and mark the location where you would like to place the pocket hole joint. Use a jigsaw or handheld drilling machine to drill 3/8 inch deep holes at the ends of each wood piece.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the wood's edges will help ensure that the joint won't split later.
  3. Glue the two sides of the wood together. Apply glue on both sides of the wooden plank. Allow the wood to rest for five minutes before clamping it together.
  4. Secure the pieces together. After the glue has dried thoroughly, secure the pieces so that they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. After the glue dries completely, trim off any excess wood around the joint.

Allow enough space between pieces so you can turn them inside out.
