FAQ

Which woods are good to use for furniture-making?

Woods can be classified according to how hard they are. Softwoods can be pine, fir or cedar. They are great for outdoor furniture as they resist rot. The hardwoods include teak, maple, mahogany and oak. They can't withstand the elements outside so they're best kept indoors.

What is the minimum amount I will need to start?

Each project is unique so there aren’t exact numbers. But if you want to get an idea of how much money you'll need, consider these factors:

  • Cost of materials
  • Tools and equipment
  • Time spent working on this project
  • Your hourly rate
  • What amount of profit can you expect to make?
  • Hire help

For those just beginning, it may be a good idea to start small with simple items like boxes and picture frames. As you gain experience, more difficult projects will become possible.

What are the basics of woodworking?

A great way to start learning how to build furniture is by building a simple bench for yourself. You can do this project using any type of wood you have on hand at home. If you aren't sure what type of wood to use, you can buy cheap pine boards from Lowes or Home Depot. You'll need to sand the bench after it's built. Then, finish it with varnish or a stain.

How can a woodworker start making money?

Many people are starting to learn how to build furniture because they want to start an online business. But if you're just getting started building furniture, there are other ways to earn money besides selling on Etsy. You could sell at craft fairs or local events. For those who want to build their own furniture, you might offer workshops. You might be able to offer services like remodeling homes or making custom pieces for clients if you are a skilled carpenter.

Where do I get my woodworking supplies?

There are plenty of places where you can find everything you need to start out. For example, you could visit local hardware stores or look online at websites like Amazon.com.

You can also look for used furniture at flea markets or garage sales.

How To

How to join wooden boards without using nails

Many people love woodworking. It is relaxing and enjoyable because you can create something useful with wood. Sometimes you may want to join two pieces together of wood without using nails. This article will show you how to do it to make your woodwork projects look great.

Before you can join the wood pieces together, you need to remove any rough edges. You don't want to leave sharp corners that could cause problems later on down the road. Now you can start gluing the boards together.

If you're working with hardwood, you should only apply glue to one side. You should glue both sides if you are working with softwoods such as pine and cedar. Once you have applied the glue, press down on the boards until they are fully attached. Be sure to let the glue dry before you move on to the next step.

Once you've glued your boards together you will need to drill holes in the joints to accommodate screws. The size of these holes depends on what type of screw you choose to use. If you are going to use a half-inch wood screw, you will need to drill at least 3/4 inch deep.

After drilling your holes, drive the screws into the board's backside. Do not hit the boards' front surfaces. It will ruin the finish. Don't drive the screws too far into the end. This will help prevent splitting of the end grain.

You'll need to protect your completed project from the elements. You can seal the furniture pieces or cover the top. Either way, you'll want to use a product that will last for years to come. You can choose from oil-based varnishes or polyurethane, shellac and lacquer as examples.

These products can generally be found in any home improvement shop. Just make sure that you buy the right kind for the job. Remember that some finishes can be toxic, so you should not use them indoors. So, always wear protective gear when handling them.
